An Atlanta attorney has offered up an unlikely defense for discharging a weapon and killing his wife on September 25. Claud McIver, who was sitting in the backseat of a car with a loaded gun, says that he only had the weapon in his lap because of fear that Black Lives Matters supporters would carjack them.
His wife, Diane McIver, died of a gunshot wound to the back, from a bullet that had passed through the seat.
As reported by The Grio:
According to McIver, he was sitting in the backseat when several individuals approached the car. There had been multiple Black Lives Matter protests in the area recently, and McIver pulled the gun out of the center console as a precautionary measure, Bill Crane, a McIver family friend, told the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
McIver claimed to have been falling asleep while the gun was in his lap and said that he didn’t remember pulling the trigger. The bullet passed through the back of the seat and struck McIver’s wife in the back, killing her.
The case remains under investigation by the Atlanta Police Department—though it sounds much more like the plot of a Lifetime movie waiting to happen.
