Marcus McFarland Shares the Story Behind His Powerful “Yes Lord Yes”

Gospel artist, songwriter and preacher Marcus McFarland, known as Elder Mac, is entering a new chapter in his faith journey with his latest single, “Yes Lord Yes.”

During an appearance on Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell and Mr. Griff, McFarland opened up about his upbringing, family and the experiences that helped shape his relationship with God.
McFarland grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the Church of God in Christ. He was raised by Pastor Samuel McFarland and Evangelist Shirley McFarland and said his parents played a major role in helping him develop his faith.
Music was also a major part of his childhood. McFarland began playing drums and alto saxophone in church and even started playing the organ when he was around four years old.
Today, he is a husband and father of three. He recently celebrated 20 years of marriage to his wife, Melissa, and is also preparing to watch his oldest daughter, Mikayla, begin college while raising 13-year-old twins Marcus II and Mariah.
Campbell asked McFarland what ultimately brought him to his “yes” to God, especially after experiencing the doubts and questions that can come with growing up in church.
“I saw God prove himself too much, even when I said no,” McFarland explained.

He said God’s faithfulness became undeniable, even during seasons when he made mistakes or turned away. That realization eventually changed how he understood what it meant to say yes to God.
The song took on an even deeper meaning following the death of his father in 2023. McFarland explained that although some expected him to take over his father’s ministry, he felt God leading him in a different direction.
“The Lord specifically told me that He did not call the people my father shepherd to me,” McFarland said.
He ultimately chose to dissolve the ministry and follow what he believed was God’s assignment for his own life.

“My yes Lord didn’t look like everybody else’s yes Lord,” he said.
Mr. Griff also celebrated McFarland’s musical journey, including his recent appearance during Fred Hammond’s Tiny Desk performance, where McFarland received an opportunity to perform a solo.

That moment was years in the making. McFarland recalled meeting Hammond when he was just 14 years old and telling him that one day they would perform on the same stage. Years later, that childhood declaration became reality.
Now, McFarland is focused on sharing his testimony and music with a wider audience. His latest single, “Yes Lord Yes,” is available for listeners to stream and download as he continues walking boldly into the next chapter of his calling.
