The judgment sides with attorneys seeking to reclaim $850,000 after the Johnsons and their attorney, Chevene King, dropped a $100 million lawsuit in March. Kendrick’s parents named the school, city, and county leaders as complicit in his death.
In an email sent out to all involved parties on August 18, Judge Richard Porter said the following, “I have concluded that the motions should be granted and that some amount would be awarded in each motion.”
According to The Daily Times, Judge Porter has not ruled on the award amount, but will set a specific quantity when the hearing resumes Monday at the Lowndes County Courthouse.
Johnson, 17, was found in a rolled up gym mat stored inside the Lowndes High School gym in January 2013. A state autopsy ruled the death was accidental, but the Johnson family remains convinced that his death was the result of foul play.
The Johnson family is considering filing another suit in the interest of holding parties responsible Kendrick’s death, reports say.
