One key theme of the book is combating the “Superwoman” complex, which Dr. Lyons described as problematic. She said, “It projects on us super human qualities and abilities, which has the negative impact of making us pretend to be without limitations.” This mindset leads to overfunctioning, overworking, and failing to set boundaries, which can undermine spiritual health. Dr. Lyons advocates for embracing God’s way of rest and acknowledging one’s limitations.

She identified pain and negative experiences as major factors, explaining, “Satan uses these experiences to make us question God’s goodness.” She suggested that faith communities need to address these issues more openly and support Black women’s emotional needs by being transparent and resolving conflicts effectively.
