Hey everyone, Erica Campbell here. I want to share a bit about my journey to learning how to speak up for myself. Growing up in a large family with strong personalities, it was easy to stay silent and not assert myself. Combined with my Christian upbringing, where we were encouraged to let God handle conflicts, I struggled with being direct.

For a long time, I avoided using strong language when I didn’t like something. Instead of saying, “Don’t do that,” I’d say, “Maybe you shouldn’t say that” or “I don’t really like that.” It took time to realize that being indirect wasn’t effective. I had to dig deep and understand why I was so hesitant to speak up.

Our communication often reflects our backgrounds. If you grew up where speaking up was common, it might be easier for you. But if you were taught to be kind and avoid conflict, asserting yourself can be challenging. I used to react to situations rather than address them proactively.

One important lesson I’ve learned is that it’s okay to speak up. You don’t have to wait for others to notice what you like or dislike. It’s essential to voice your needs and preferences in every aspect of life—whether personal, professional, or within your community. In my large, opinionated family, I’ve had to learn to express my thoughts clearly and kindly without feeling isolated.

If you’re struggling with speaking up, consider therapy or self-reflection to understand why. Being bold and loving yourself enough to assert your needs is crucial. Don’t let others dictate how you should feel—your voice matters.
