Born and raised in San Diego, J. Paul was immersed in music from an early age, with his father serving as a pastor and his mother as a minister of music. Growing up as the youngest of five boys and surrounded by a loving family, he gained insight into generations of wisdom, which has shaped his music and outlook on life. After moving to Washington, D.C., he briefly stepped away from singing but found his way back with the encouragement of friends like Clifton Ross III, who helped him regain confidence in his voice.

On The Voice, J. Paul joined Michael Bublé’s team, and the mentorship experience left a lasting impact on him. “One of the first things Michael said to me was that ‘God loves you,’” J. Paul recalled, explaining how that affirmation reassured him of his purpose. Although he was recently eliminated during the knockout rounds, J. Paul remains grateful. “The timing was perfect,” he shared, revealing that he could be home to support his husband, who had just lost his mother.
