April, who is now in her 14th year of survivorship, revealed that the idea for the Pink Awards was born during her own battle with breast cancer. Even while undergoing chemotherapy, April’s background in event planning and public relations motivated her to take action. “I just didn’t feel defeated after my diagnosis,” April explained. What started as a way to “take pink back” has evolved into an annual event that highlights not only breast cancer awareness but also celebrates Black excellence.
The Pink Awards Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to increasing visibility in clinical trials and ensuring that breast cancer survivors, especially within the Black community, have a chance to thrive. “We are still succumbing to it, so I felt like I needed to do something,” April said, explaining the purpose behind her organization.

When asked about the criteria for selecting honorees, April shared that her board is diligent in choosing individuals who embody the spirit of the awards. One special category, “The Warrior,” honors breast cancer survivors, while other categories, such as “The Samaritan,” “The Trailblazer,” and “The Visionary,” recognize those making significant contributions to their communities. This year’s honorees include figures like Pastor William Murphy and holistic health advocate Queen Afua, who April praised for their groundbreaking work in health and wellness.
