Gospel artist and choir director Dexter Walker recently joined Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell to discuss his latest single, This Is The Day, his long-standing ministry with Zion Movement, and the resurgence of choir music. Walker described the new track as a faith-strengthening anthem meant to uplift listeners. “Right now, we all need a pick-me-up,” he shared. “This song strengthens our faith and lets us know that God is in control, so we can just praise the Lord.” Erica Campbell praised the track, highlighting its distinct Chicago gospel sound.

Walker reflected on the beginnings of Zion Movement, the choir he founded in 2003 as a safe haven for young people. “It wasn’t just to start another choir,” he explained. “The Lord gave me this vision to inspire, encourage, and uplift.” Over the past 21 years, the group has released four albums and maintained its commitment to excellence despite operating without the backing of a major label. Erica commended their precision and passion, to which Walker credited his love of music and movement, nurtured during his childhood in church.

Walker also touched on his 2011 initiative to “Bring the Choir Back,” a movement aimed at restoring choirs to the forefront of gospel music. “I feel like choirs have been put on the bottom of the totem pole, along with quartet singers,” he said. “Now, I see there’s a resurgence, and that statement has brought a lot of attention back to choirs.”
